Kiggster’s 1st Day of Preschool: Mama Jitters & A Bento Lunch

OMG, when did Kiggster get old enough to start Preschool?!  Technically, she's not really starting Preschool Preschool but it's close enough.  I decided when I started staying home with Kiggster last year that I would also try to homeschool her.  I have no idea where to start with that but I figured if she was anything like me in personality and learning style, she would probably not be a "go-to-school" kinda girl.  She seems to love learning just through everyday life, our daily activities with tid bits infused into it.  She doesn't learning her numbers through me drilling it into her but rather through us singing songs in the car, counting the steps as we walk up and down flights of stairs, etc.  Now she knows her numbers and colors in two languages and even some in ASL and that was all through us living life.  I want her to love learning and not dread it.  I used to be an avid reader...up until there became required reading and I no longer loved it and haven't really been able to … [Read more...]

Carrot-Shaped Calzone Recipe & Night Time Egg Hunting

We had a fun pre-Easter party on Friday and had our very first night time egg hunt!  It was a potluck and when I asked Honey what Easter themed dish I should bring, he said, "Rabbit!"  Um…no thanks Honey!  I definitely don't want to be remembered as the rabbit killer so the next best thing were Carrot-Shaped Calzones!  I found my inspiration on Pinterest and used this recipe from Inspired By Familia but I changed a couple things around.  Ingredients:  Pillsbury Pizza Dough Sausage Meat Spinach Bag of Shredded Broccoli & Carrots Parmesan Cheese Mexican Cheese Blend Stalks of Parsley for Decoration Italian Seasoning Basically I followed the instructions from Inspired By Familia except mine didn't quite come out quite as pretty looking!  I think mine turned out more rounded because I used bulkier ingredients like sausage instead of pepperoni.  I did nix the orange dye so that I could … [Read more...]

Healthy Cheese Pretzel Recipe

I am very excited to have invited Corinna from The Sweet Spot here to share a yummy and easy recipe.  Hope you all will enjoy making it, I think I'm going to have to try this next week! When I was 12 years old, I learned how to make this healthy cheese pretzel recipe. Our neighbors across the street sent me to babysitting school with the hopes that I would become their ultimate babysitter. One of the things that really stuck with me was the importance of feeding growing children healthy snacks. The instructor taught us how to make this cheese pretzel recipe and I have been making it ever since. This recipe is so simple and you probably have all the ingredients in your pantry already! 'My kids' loved two pretzels and half an apple for an afternoon snack. I hope your kids enjoy it too! Healthy Cheese Pretzels 1 package active dry yeast 2 cups flour, plus more for dusting 2 tsp sugar 3/4 cup cheddar cheese, grated egg wash (1 egg, … [Read more...]

Chinese New Year: Traditions, Crafts, Free Printables & More

2013 is the Year of the Snake and I was born during the year of the Dog.  What is your Chinese zodiac sign?! Since Chinese New Year (or as others know it, Asian New Year or Lunar New Year) is on Sunday, February 10th, there are tons of things to do and prepare...and even tons of things on the DO NOT do list!  I pick and choose the things that I like during this time because I don't want Kiggster to lose her culture but I also know I can't keep up with all the traditions (though with some things, I see them more as superstition but depending on who you talk to, you could get a different answer)!  Mostly I do things for fun and I want it to be that way for Kiggster too as she learns about her culture. So, ever wonder why during CNY (Chinese New Year), if you walk through Chinatown, you see a pattern between all the stores, vendors, and homes?!  Below is a cliff notes version of some of the things that could help you get one step closer to understanding … [Read more...]

Revamped Christmas Turned Valentines & Chinese New Year: Gingerbread Cookies

I previously started a Revamped post to turn Christmas items and activities into Valentines theme.  Last time I posted about how to use your Gingerbread Houses to make a Valentines Love Shack but this post actually doubled for not only Valentines but Chinese New Year also!  Over the holidays, I purchased too many gingerbread cookie mixes and so of course, I couldn't make them all in time before the Christmas season was over.  So the first time we made the gingerbread cookies according to the package, we cut out different alphabets, snowmen, stars, Santas, and more. However, I was determined to use it before next Christmas so I decided to use it this last week to make some cookies with Kiggster. She loves rolling out the dough and cutting shapes out of them, which she did really well over the holidays and we even got some nice shapes out of them!  However, because she really loves to roll out the dough, sometimes, she gets over-zealous and rolls the dough … [Read more...]

Miessence: DeepGreen Alkalising Superfood Review

Am I the only one that seems to have trouble getting the family to eat enough vegetables?!  It seems no matter what we try Kiggster's first choice foods are noodles, rice, and popcorn and Honey's are chili mangoes and chai tea.  Sometimes we can get a couple bites of veggies in Kiggster and sometimes meat but it's unpredictable when she wants them.  So I needed to look for alternative methods to deliver those veggies in the least painful way possible!  That's when I discovered Miessence's Deep Green Alkalising Superfood. Keeping the correct pH balance in our bodies is vital for ongoing good health.  Failing to keep that balance can result in loss of minerals that results in reduced bone density associated with osteoporosis. A body which is too acidic has been linked to other conditions including athersclerosis, kidney and gallbladder stones and arthritis. Deep Green Alkalising is the solution. Made from the freeze dried juices … [Read more...]

Healthy Veggie-Loaded Savory Popcorn Recipe

So if you've been around this blog for awhile, you'll know that Kiggster looooves popcorn!  Actually, some would say she's obsessed with popcorn and can down a whole bag all by herself.  Because of that, I wanted to try to find a way to healthify her popcorn diet without her really discovering that I was doing it!  I've been making Kiggster popcorn with some plain bagged popcorn I bought for awhile now but I was only using butter, salt, paprika and tumeric.  I recently was introduced to Miessence's DeepGreen Superfood which is made with 100% vegan, raw, and certified organic ingredients.  One teaspoon of this freeze-dried powder is equivalent to 60ml of fresh green juices and that was perfect for our family.  So it dawned on me this week that I could totally use this powder to  make Kiggster some popcorn and so that's what I tried today!  Kiggster was all over the popcorn that I made with no hesitation about the DeepGreen … [Read more...]
