I was given the opportunity to review the Smartipants line of cloth diapers and I received the one in Bubble Gum Pink! The picture below is supposed to be the bubble gum pink but the diaper I received looked more like a hot pink color.
I've mentioned this previously in my last cloth diaper review but I thought it should be mentioned again. Kiggster is only about 20 pounds and even when she was about 15+ pounds, her one size diapers were already getting what seemed too snug for her around her cute little thighs. Therefore, we had to retire many of her one size diapers (several brands) and for the rest of her one size diapers in our current stash, she is in the largest settings. So even though those other one size diapers are advertised to fit up to 30-40+ pounds, she already "outgrew" them in her thighs! Smartipants is supposed to fit newborns to toddlers from 7-35 lbs. I was a little worried that she wouldn't fit it but when I put it on her at the largest setting…it was too big and actually sagging on her! I am happy to say that she is only on the medium setting and has tons of room to grow! Below is how the front of their diaper looks:
Some things that make Smartipants different than other diapers:
- Leak-guard Technology
- Patented Smart Sleeve
- Gentle Stretch Elastic
- Soft Waterproof Outer Fabric
- Manufactured in Southern California with the softest stay-dry lining and water resistant materials.
When I first took the diaper out of the package, I noticed right away how soft the diaper felt, not just on the inside but the outside of the diaper too. I loved that it didn't feel rigid or like a plastic shower curtain! The elastic on the diaper also did not leave huge red marks around Kiggster's thighs and that was a super plus because that's a pet peeve of ours. The elastic was gentle but not loose so I didn't have problems with it leaking. This is what Smartipants says about their Leak-Guard Technology:
Only Smartipants features our unique isolated insert lining, putting absorbency right where you need it and preventing moisture from seeping outside the diaper.
I did not have any problems with it leaking during the day, however, for night times, I did add a double insert since Kiggster is somewhat of a heavy wetter at night. I did not try it at night with just one insert and see if it leaked since 99% of the time with all other brands, it did and I just couldn't chance more laundry with that kind of track record! As for the Smart Sleeve, basically, Smartipants diapers have 2 very wide openings on each end of the diaper. This feature basically allows you to not have to take the insert out of the diaper when washing but it will just come out on it's own during the wash. Since the openings were so wide on the diapers (which is great for stuffing-love it), I decided to try leaving the insert while washing to see if it came out on it's own. The 1st time I washed it, only 3/4 of the insert came out while the other 1/4 of the insert was still stuck at the opening. I did the smell test, I think it passed. Then the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th washings, the whole insert came out of the openings. I have to take the inserts out anyways for all my other diapers so I probably will still take out the insert for Smartipants for future washings. The diaper washed really well-no stains so far and still looks like new!
So I do have to mention, maybe it's not important to others but made a huge difference for me…their Smart Sleeve Insert has a lime green border around it making it super easy to tell that it belongs to the Smartipants diaper! With so many companies using the same type of insert but varying just by a smidgen, it's so hard to tell which insert belongs to which diaper but call it my OCD, I want the right insert to go with the right diaper! Having the insert color coded makes such a difference when I'm doing loads of cloth diaper laundry and having to stuff them all while playing the matching game!
